Throughout Rose English's varied and influential career, the horse has served as a focal point to explore women's bodies and gender roles. At once playful and critical, this photograph was executed in 1975, the same year as English's legendary Quadrille performance, in which six women dressed in horsehair tails and high-hoof shoes carried out a dressage competition at the Southampton Horse Show.
