Transformation is at the centre of Ann-Marie James's work, using classical imagery as her starting point to create new hybrids. In an ongoing project, James focuses on André Malraux's groundbreaking Le Musée Imaginaire, a tome referred to as a 'museum without walls', containing dramatic photography of art historical objects spanning centuries from collections across the globe. In her 2016 Musee Imaginaire series, James reveals new imagery in this found object by meticulously cutting and folding pages from the text. The resulting works are both subtle and arresting in their abstraction.
